Inarguably, many weight loss supplements come with a diet plan. However, getting the best or the correct plan that will offer the goal of losing excess fat or weight as well as promoting the overall health of the body, is a cumbersome task. In this review, we are going to dissect Medifast, a reputable meal replacement shake.

Nutritional FactsThe Medifast shake comes in different flavor options including Dutch Chocolate, French Vanilla, Mocha, Orange Cream and Strawberry but for the purpose of this review we are going to look at the French Vanilla Shake…

Soy protein isolate, fructose, dextrin, whey protein concentrate, modified food starch, soy lecithin, salt, cellulose gum, natural and artificial flavors, acesulfame potassium, corn syrup, xanthan gum, carrageenan, caramel color.

Vitamins and Minerals: Potassium chloride, calcium phosphate, magnesium oxide, ascorbic acid, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, vitamin E acetate, niacinamide, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, thiamin mononitrate, vitamin A palmitate, chromium chloride, folic acid, biotin, potassium iodide, sodium molybdate, sodium selenite, vitamin K1, vitamin D3, vitamin B12. Contains: Soy and milk.

The Medifast shake contains a fine amount if calories per serving. With 110 calories a serving you can easily add other healthy ingredients to your shake. This way you are also keeping your calorie count low which will eventually help you lose weight.

The Medifast Shake also contains a good amount of protein for weight loss at 14g per serving. A great rule of thumb for a meal replacement/weight loss shake is to have 14g-20g of protein per shake serving, in order to help boost the metabolism in your body and lose weight. Protein also helps to keep you full and doesn’t have a lot of calories.

Even though the amount of protein is a good amount for weight loss, one of the types of protein, soy isolate, is a bad choice for dropping pounds and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, in our opinion.

The reason is that soy contains phytoestrogens which have an estrogenic effect on the body. Excess estrogen in the body can contribute to weight gain due to the formation of stubborn fat, which commonly is in the belly of men, and the hips and thighs of women.

Studies also show that soy can have adverse effects on the thyroid, becoming hypothyroidism, which has symptoms of weight gain, fatigue and lethargy.

Medifast supplement contains about 3 to 6 grams of dietary fiber depending on the meal plan one has selected. This may not be much, but some additional fiber comes from the green portions of food you take salads and vegetables.

Vitamins and minerals

There are 21 vitamins and minerals in this shake; this adds up to the micronutrient needs of the body in the first place, with each serving guaranteeing dieters of about 20 percent of vitamins and nutrients daily.  These nutrients go a long way in boosting your overall immunity levels; increase the rate of metabolism while reducing the oxidation levels in cells. Through this, weight loss and promotion of individual health goals become easy.

The Medifast shake contains high amounts of sugar per serving, a whopping 7 gms per serving. It contains fructose , this is usually extracted from fruits, is added to the supplement to reduce the bitter aftertaste of Ace K. Additionally, it helps in lowering the insulin levels in the body, hence reduce the risk of contracting blood sugar.

Artificial Sweeteners

Along with sugar, the Medifast shake also contains an artificial sweetener, which can also lead to weight gain and studies show may have potentially negative health consequences. It contains Acesulfame potassium, this is a calorie-free artificial sweetener popularly known as Ace-K and is marketed as Sweet One. It is about 200 times sweeter than sucrose. However, it has a slightly bitter aftertaste, especially at high concentrations.

Another Controversial Ingredient: Carrageenan

Carrageenan – a thickening agent rerived from red seaweed – has been a controversial ingredient especially as of late. Studies have shown that food-grade carrageenan (which is found in many foods including yogurt, dairy alternatives like almond milk, and protein powders), may cause gastrointestinal inflammation. Many people who have had stomach problems and then removed carrageenan from their diet saw relief.

In November 2016, the National Organic Standards Board voted to remove carrageenan from the list of substances approved for use in “USDA Organic” food items – a measure that will go into effect in November of 2018 – further evidence of the potential consequences of this ingredient.

Undoubtedly, this product is not affordable to some people. The Medifast shake goes for $19.50 for box containing 7 servings, so that is $2.79 per serving. It is highly recommended that you make use of discounts and gift vouchers to save money on the supplement’s total budget.  However, some people find Medifast a more affordable option, compared to purchasing food to get the same nutrition values.

Final Thoughts

Medifast’s longevity as a diet program attracts many positive comments. However, we cannot rule out the fact that it is too pricey, making some customers raise complaints. Extreme changes come with sticking with the program; hence go through the Transition phase successfully and into Maintenance phase.

This meal replacement plan can help control blood sugar in people with diabetes. It is also good for someone with high blood pressure and high cholesterol hence reduce the over dependency for medicine. Talk to your doctor before making any changes in your medication.

Medifast can make slow or non-existent weight loss a thing of the past, as it encourages steady weight loss each and every week. It is one of the soundest weight loss programs today. It will ensure that the money invested, will offer results terms of improving your overall health hence improving your quality of life.
